Dark Matter

To fast forward to the list of Dark Hadith, skip the next four paragraphs.

Also, it is better to start with reading the many meaningful Good Hadith, to avoid dismissing the entire Hadith-as-literature corpus as useless.

Missing the Forest

Dark Matter has two components:

  1. a large share of Hadith that do not light up the Quranic LPs, even though they might be classified by Traditional Muslims as Sahih or mutawatir, based on verification of the isnad, or chains of transmission.
  2. most of the content of the Sirah books. They are even less reliable than the shaky sahih Hadith since they never went through isnad verification.

‘Dark’ is not always an assertion of the negative, but it always means unable to illuminate the Quranic LPs, similar to the role of dark matter in astrophysics. When Traditionalists dote on details of the Prophets’ life, unreliable as they may be, they lose sight of the Big Five problems. This resulted in enormous social evils like Slavery (until recently), Sectarianism, Patriarchy, and many more, all of which collectively result in the ultimate problems of Brain Drain and Poverty. In doting on details, they overlook the overarching moral trajectory of the Prophet ï·º, who was very progressive by the standards of his age.

An example of misplaced details. Traditionalists mirror the imagined appearance of the Prophet ï·º – a bushy beard, a Kufi cap, a white robe (thawb), etc. But that image is invalid. Most likely, the Prophet ï·º wore a knee-length sarong or lungi (not a long thawb), a green turban (not a white cap) and his hair was woven in two braids, as was the custom of his region and time, as noted by a conservative scholar, Muhammad: A Very Short Introduction (Brown, J.A.C., 37).

Hadiths: Messy Role Model

Did the Prophet at age 52 have sex with a 9-year old? Or did later generations fabricate it?

Note that this hadith in the Sahih Bukhari collection is super strong due and mutawatir, due to multiple isnad, according to the best of ulama. Invalidating this hadith will torpedo the entire isnad system of hadith verification, resulting in a dramatic collapse of the ecosystem of Traditional Islam.

https://sunnah.com/abudawud:2315

Is waterless fasting required only when it does not entail hardship?

https://quran.com/2/184

Fast for a specific number of days, but if one of you is ill, or on a journey, on other days later. For those who can fast only with extreme difficulty, there is a way to compensate – feed a needy person. But if anyone does good of his own accord, it is better for him, and fasting is better for you, if only you knew.

https://sunnah.com/bukhari:4506

Why did God/Allah raise the bar on who should fast?

https://quran.com/2/185

It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear messages giving guidance and distinguishing between right and wrong. So any one of you who is present that month should fast, and anyone who is ill or on a journey should make up for the lost days by fasting on other days later. God wants ease for you, not hardship. He wants you to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him for having guided you, so that you may be thankful.
